The method involves determining (11) an emission center value of a pollutant in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, in which an amount of the pollutant is determined in the exhaust gas, while the internal combustion engine delivers a predetermined carbon dioxide. The operating parameter of the internal combustion engine is adjusted (13,14) in response to the emission center value and a predetermined limit value. The pollutant has nitrogen oxide and carbon particle. An independent claim is included for an internal combustion engine with a control device.
