A provided electric bicycle can apply brakes while a rider firmly grips a handlebar. The electric bicycle includes: an electric motor that generates an auxiliary driving force; a coaster brake that is disposed in a hub 16 of a rear wheel 4 and is activated when pedals 8 are rotated in a direction opposite to forward travel; and a control unit that causes the electric motor to perform one of a regenerative braking operation and a braking operation when the coaster brake is activated. Thus, when the pedals 8 are rotated with feet in a direction opposite to forward travel, the electric motor can apply brakes while the coaster brake is activated to apply brakes with a handlebar 5 firmly gripped with hands.
