One of the methods includes receiving, by a self-executing contract, settlement information from at least two nodes in a network, the network comprising a plurality of nodes, each node in the plurality of nodes may maintain at least a predetermined number of tokens, each token representing a value. The method includes validating a current state of a public ledger. The method includes generating fulfillment information based on the received settlement information. The method also includes contributing to an updated state of the public ledger using the fulfillment information; wherein each token is associated with a payload describing the production, consumption, management, storage or transmission of electricity.
