An interface (I) connects the device with actuators for adapting light distributions of the headlights or parts of the headlights. A conversion unit (D) converts the selected angles into reference input signals. One of the angles is limited into a limited angle by the control unit when amount of deviation between the angles is larger than a maximum allowable deviation.
