The present invention relates to a device or sensor that detects the presence of ice, water, snow and other substances on the surface of a roadway, in a local region or zone thereof. Said device comprises two or more laser sources with different wavelengths and optoelectronic and electronic detection means suitable for detecting changes relating to the complex refractive index of a region of the roadway associated with the presence of said substances. The invention comprises the use of signal modulation and demodulation techniques for providing a device with a high level of sensitivity and coverage that is compact and can be used in vehicles.
