It is described an energy storage and recovery system (100, 200), which comprises (a) a thermal energy storage and recovery device (110) having a container (112), a heat storage material being accommodated within the container (112), a first fluid terminal (116) and a second fluid terminal (117), wherein a heat transfer fluid is guidable between the first fluid terminal (116) and the second fluid terminal (117) whereby a heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid and the heat storage material occurs, (b) a first fluid energy machine (160, 260) being connected with the first fluid terminal (116), (c) a pressure affecting device (170, 270) being connected with the second fluid terminal (117), and (d) a pressure storage vessel (140) being connected both with the second fluid terminal (117) and with the pressure affecting device (170, 270). Further described is a method for storing energy with such an energy storage and recovery system (100) and a corresponding method for recovering energy from such a thermal energy storage and recovery system (200).
