The battery (1) has two galvanic cells (2) electrically interconnected with each other. A measuring unit determines a measurement value to a functional parameter of one of the galvanic cells. A memory device (6) is assigned to a control device (3), and stores a target value of the functional parameter. A computing unit (5) associates the measurement value of one of the galvanic cells, a measurement value of the other galvanic cell and a target value to provide a computed result. The control device initiates a predetermined action as a function of the computed result. The measuring unit is designed as a sensor (4a) e.g. temperature sensor or voltage sensor, or as a current measuring unit (4b) i.e. current value sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a battery.
