An engine 10 includes a fuel addition valve 34 that adds fuel to exhaust gas. The fuel addition valve 34 executes a fuel addition operation when a reduction process of an exhaust purification catalyst 32 is performed. To prevent clogging of the fuel addition valve 34, an ECU 50 executes clogging prevention control that drives the fuel addition valve 34 even at a timing at which addition of fuel is unnecessary. If exhaust emissions are adversely affected by executing the clogging prevention control, the ECU 50 executes the clogging prevention control while reducing the exhaust gas by changing the valve timing of the intake valve 16. It is thus possible to suppress an injection amount of fuel that is injected according to the clogging prevention control, and maintain favorable exhaust emissions.",
