Surveying staff for electronic levelling instrument

A surveying staff for an electronic levelling instrument comprises a substrate on which a short-range barcode (14) for height measurement within the near field of view of the instrument is engraved. The short-range barcode (14) is scaled down with respect to a barcode (13) for regular measurement and is in a monochrome pattern which is the reverse of that of the regular barcode (13).
