When it is determined that an intake air flow rate is equal to or higher than a predetermined value (S10); that a vehicle is being decelerated (S12); and that countermeasures against surge are necessary (S14), the opening degree of an EGR valve is calculated according to a fuel injection amount injected by a fuel injection nozzle, and the EGR valve is driven so that the opening degree is achieved (S16 and S18). When the intake air amount is lower than the predetermined value, and the deceleration is ended, the routine returns (S22 and S24).
