The method involves splitting water in an electrolyzer (22) into hydrogen and oxygen and is stored in separate storage containers (25,26). The hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell (27) is converted into electrical energy (28), such that hydrogen is stored in a metal hydride storage container (26). An independent claim is included for reversible fuel cell system.
