The internal combustion engine (10) includes a turbocharger (24) that includes a turbine (24b) disposed in an exhaust passage (26, 28), the turbine (24b) being operative by exhaust energy of the internal combustion engine (10); an upstream catalyst (30), disposed in the exhaust passage (26) at a downstream side of the turbine (24b), for purifying an exhaust gas; an exhaust bypass passage (38) for bypassing the turbine (24b); and a waste gate valve (40) for opening or closing the exhaust bypass passage (38). The waste gate valve (40) is controlled to be in an open state during performance of a fuel cut of the internal combustion engine (10).",
