The method involves determining successive standard flight sections (S1A-S4A) e.g. cruise sections, from managing parameters, where each flight section is defined between a section starting point and a section ending point. The determined successive flight sections are joined together so as to automatically form a vertical profile (PV1) of a flight plan, where the ending point of any flight section corresponds to the starting point of the flight section directly following the ending point. The formed vertical profile of the flight plan is supplied to displaying units. The flight section is selected from one of the following types such as climbing section type, descent section type, constant speed section type and constant altitude section type. An independent claim is also included for a device for automatically managing a vertical profile of a flight plan of an aircraft.
