The present disclosure relates to a negative electrode for a rechargeable lithium battery, and a rechargeable lithium battery including the negative electrode, and for example to a negative electrode including a negative electrode current collector, a first and second negative electrode active material layers stacked on a first surface of the negative electrode current collector, and a third and fourth negative electrode active material layers stacked on a second surface of the negative electrode current collector. A content of a carbon-based negative electrode active material in the first negative electrode active material layer is larger than the content in the second negative electrode active material layer. A content of the carbon-based negative electrode active material in the third negative electrode active material layer is smaller than the content in the fourth negative electrode active material layer.
