The invention relates to electrocatalytically active or activatable composite bodies, their manufacture, and their use as an anion exchange membrane (AEM) in alkaline water electrolysis. One of the underlying objectives was to provide a composite body that swells only minimally when used as an AEM in alkaline water electrolysis. This is achieved with a textile fabric structure which is used as reinforcement. An essential aspect of the invention consists in the coordination of the fiber material with the membrane material: a fiber material is used which has chemical similarity to the membrane material. The aforementioned chemical similarity exists in the repeating units of the polymeric fiber material and of the ionomer, which respectively each have at least two phenylene groups.
