An object of the present invention is to reduce the quantity of smoke generation during transitional operation under low temperature combustion in an internal combustion engine that selects, as its combustion state, either normal combustion or low temperature combustion in accordance with the operation range. In the invention, an upper limit value of the intake air quantity for keeping the quantity of smoke generation within an allowable range is set during low temperature combustion, and the EGR ratio of the intake air is controlled so that the intake air quantity does not exceed the upper limit value during transitional operation.
