The present invention relates to a binuclear ruthenium complex dye having a substituted bipyridyl group and represented by the general formula (1): wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 each independently represents a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one of R 1 and R 2 represents a linear or branched alkyl group having 10 to 30 carbon atoms and at least one of R 3 and R 4 represents a linear or branched alkyl group having 10 to 30 carbon atoms; X represents a counter ion; n represents a number of the counter ions needed to neutralize a charge of the complex; and proton(s) (H + ) of one or more carboxyl groups (-COOH) may dissociate.
