Integration of a surface heat exchanger with controlled air flow in an airplane engine

DRIVE July 4, 2012
Source
The cooler (1) has outer and inner exchange surfaces (2, 3) positioned on sides of an oil circuit (4) and swept by an air flow. The inner surface is positioned in a cavity (9) provided with an air inlet and an air outlet. The inlet and/or the outlet comprise a covering unit (8) e.g. scoop, to regulate air supply on the inner surface. The unit is completely closed when an airplane is in cruising mode or ground start phase, opened in an intermediate position when the airplane is in a takeoff phase, and completely opened when the airplane is in a ground idle mode.
