The vacuum cleaner (1) comprises a housing (2) having a battery compartment (3) for holding a battery (4), and a vacuum generator (5) for generating an air stream along a flow path (A). The battery compartment is arranged at the upstream of the flow path from the vacuum generator. A switch-over mechanism is designed to connect the battery compartment to the vacuum generator on the suction side in one switching position and on the pressure side in the other switching position.
