The ID verification communication is started by transmission of a wireless signal from a vehicle (2) and performed between the vehicle (2) and the electronic key (1). The electronic key system (3) determines the location of the electronic key (1) in accordance with the received signal strength of a radio wave used for the ID verification communication. A signal strength measurement circuit (17, 18, 19) measures a first signal strength (B1), which is the received signal strength when a signal from the electronic key (1) is received, and a second signal strength (B2), which is the received signal strength of the radio wave during a vacant time (Tw) when the electronic key (1) is performing the ID verification communication.
