June 20, 2012
A pedal mechanism (100) for a wheeled device (20) includes a frame (22), at least one wheel (74) having a geared hub (78), and the at least one wheel (74) rotatably supported by the frame (22). At least one pedal lever (102) is pivotably mounted to the frame (22) at a mounted end (104) and each lever (102) has a drive end (106) opposite the mounted end (104). A rotatable drive gear (110) is carried by the frame (22) and includes an axle (112) extending from at least one side. A crank (114) is coupled between the pedal lever drive end (106) and the axle (112). An endless chain (124) is coupled between the geared hub (78) and the rotatable drive gear (110) so that movement of the at least one pedal lever (102) causes rotation of the wheel (74). The wheeled device (20) may also include a system controller (140) and a motor (50), wherein a user controller panel (62) allows for combined use of the pedal mechanism (100) and the motor (50).
