A temperature sensor is provided in an exhaust passage in an internal combustion engine. A delay in a response from the temperature sensor is compensated for. A change rate is sequentially calculated which is an amount of change in a detected value from the temperature sensor per predetermined time. The calculated change rate is multiplied by a predetermined characteristic value to calculate a correction value. The detected value is corrected based on the calculated correction value. The temperature of the exhaust gas is calculated, which serves as a measured value. The delay in the response from the temperature sensor is compensated for using a simple and practical technique.
