The present invention relates to an ethanol processing system for generating a hydrogen gas-rich reformed gas stream characterized by comprising an integrated reformer which in turn comprises (a) an adiabatic pre-reformer in which the ethanol is catalytically transformed into methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and (b) an isothermal reformer in which the methane contained in the pre-reformed gas stream obtained in the pre-reformer is catalytically converted into hydrogen; and a catalytic combustor providing the thermal energy required by the reformer. Likewise, the invention relates to a process for reforming ethanol which uses said ethanol processing system, as well as to the integration of said processing system with a fuel cell system, both integrated in an energy generating system capable of propelling a motor vehicle.
