Method for operating a combustion engine and device for implementing the method

The method involves guiding exhaust gas (PM) produced by an internal combustion engine (10) via a particulate filter (20) and a three-way catalytic coating (22). Air-fuel mixture supplied to the engine is adjusted to an air-fuel ratio with an average lambda value (lambdam). The air-fuel ratio with predetermined oscillation frequency and amplitude is deflected around the average value in a periodic alternating manner toward a low lambda value (lambdaM) and a high lambda value (lambdaF), where the frequency and amplitude are selected such that the filter is quasi-continuously regenerated. An independent claim is also included for a control device for controlling an operation of an internal combustion engine.
