Electrochemical battery (1) comprises a stack (2) of cells (8), successively stacked in a stacking direction, where the cells include electrochemical cells, preferably fuel cells or electrolysis cells, a first holding system (10) for holding the entire stack together, a second holding system (20) for holding partial stacks of the stack together, independently of the first holding system. An independent claim is also included for removing at least one cell from an electrochemical battery, whose cells stack is held together by the first holding system via a clamping in the stacking direction, comprising (a) clamping the partial stack containing cell, which is not removed, using the second holding system in the stacking direction, (b) dissolving the clamping of the cells stack by the first holding system, and (c) removing the partial stack containing the cell to be removed from the cells stack.
