The system includes a combustion airflow control valve adapted for positioning upstream of an air inlet of a combustion chamber. The system further includes a control unit for controlling the airflow controlling valve and an exhaust gas temperature sensor adapted for positioning upstream of, and adjacent to, the exhaust gas after-treatment device. In use the temperature sensor communicates with the control unit and the control unit communicates with the airflow control valve. The system in particular has its airflow control valve adapted to be operated at a frequency commensurate with the combustion cycle frequency. Further a prime mover is disclosed that includes an internal combustion engine provided with an exhaust gas after-treatment device and the system for controlling the exhaust gas temperature.",
