The present invention relates to a control unit (3) of a motorized belt retractor (1), characterized in that the control unit (3) comprises a state machine module (9). The implementation of a state machine module (9) into a control unit (3) of a motorized belt retractor (1) has the advantage that the motorized belt retractor (1) does not need to be connected to a central ECU via a vehicle network, e.g. a CAN or LIN. A motorized belt retractor (1) which is controlled by the inventive control unit (3) may be autonomous and simply connected to the power supply from the vehicle battery.
