Embodiments described herein relate to a method comprising soaking a wood in a mild acid, soaking the wood in an iron containing solution, pyrolizing the wood, heat treating the wood to create a graphitized monolith, leaching the graphitized monolith to remove iron remaining in the graphitized monolith, and infiltrating the graphitized monolith with sulfur to create a cathode.
