A normalized open circuit voltage of a first battery cell group of the battery cell groups is generated based on the open circuit voltages of the battery cell groups. A normalized cell group voltage of the first battery cell group is generated based on the cell group voltages of the battery cell groups. An assessment of the normalized open circuit voltage and the normalized cell group voltage of the first battery cell group is performed to determine whether there is an internal soft short in the first battery cell group.",
