The backlight includes a plurality of light emitters and a light-emitting surface that can emit light from the plurality of light emitters. The display panel includes a display surface that displays an image with light emitted from the light-emitting surface. The optical system enlarges an image of the display surface and an image of the light-emitting surface by different enlargement factors to form a virtual image in a field of view of a user. The backlight controller performs local dimming control by switching each of the plurality of light emitters between an emissive state and a non-emissive state based on the image displayed on the display panel. The light-emitting surface is smaller than the display surface.",
