ADAPTIVE ELECTROMAGNETIC DAMPING FOR STORAGE COMPARTMENT

Source
A magnetic closure system has a biasing apparatus to apply a closing force to a movable member to bias the movable member toward a closed position. An electromagnet applies a damping force opposing the closing force, the damping force having a magnitude based on a magnitude of the electrical stimulus. A sensor generates position information indicative of a position of the movable member. A controller applies the electrical stimulus to the electromagnet based on the position information to decelerate the movable member before the movable member reaches the closed position. The biasing apparatus can be a permanent magnet having first magnetic field that attenuates over a shorter distance than a second magnetic field generated by the electromagnet. The sensor can be a potentiometer or a mechanical switch. The controller can modulate the electrical stimulus based on a configurable damping profile.
