A process for producing a carbon material comprising (A) a step of polymerizing a compound represented by the formula (1) wherein R is independently in each occurrence a hydrogen atom etc., R' is independently in each occurrence a hydrogen atom etc., and n represents an integer of 3 to 7, a compound having 1 to 30 carbon atoms and having at least one divalent group represented by the formula (2a) wherein X represents an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, or at least two divalent groups represented by the formula (2b) wherein R 1 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms etc. , and X represents an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, and an aldehyde compound to obtain a polymer, and (B) a step of heating the polymer obtained in the above-mentioned step (A) at 600°C to 3000°C under an inert gas atmosphere.
