Method of scavenging residual combustion gases of a multicylinder supercharged direct-injection internal combustion engine.

The method involves regulating opening/closing of exhaust valve at crank angle during exhaust phase operation of a diesel type engine. The opening/closing sequence of exhaust valve starts after the start of exhaust phase where the piston sets in bottom dead center, and ends mostly when the piston is at the next top dead center.
