A power-off brake system includes: a brake motor shaft; a stator coaxially disposed around the brake motor shaft; a flange rotor connected to the brake motor shaft and to the stator via a rolling bearing, such that a flange rotor rotates with the brake motor shaft relative to the stator; an armature connected to the flange rotor; and a coil that: (i) in a de-energized state, causes the armature to engage a grooved disc, locking the brake motor shaft; and (ii) in an energized state, causes the armature to disengage the grooved disc, releasing the brake motor shaft.
