A secondary battery (100, 200) is provided comprising an electrode assembly having a first electrode and a second electrode (112, 212), a bare cell (110, 210) for mounting the electrode assembly therein, a top case (120, 220) coupled to the upper part of the bare cell (110, 210), a first insulating portion (113; 213) for insulating at least a part of the first electrode (111; 211), and a second insulating portion (114; 214) for insulating at least a part of the second electrode (112; 212), the first and second insulating portions (113, 114; 213, 214) being formed in the upper part of the bare cell (110, 210). Voids (121, 221) are provided between the first and second insulating portions (113, 114; 213, 214) and the top case (120, 220) to space apart the top case from the first and second insulating portions (113, 114; 213, 214). Such structure avoids interference which occurs at the time of assembling a bare cell and a top case.
