The present invention relates a method and system to control an engine shut-down for a vehicle having an internal combustion engine and a start-stop system at least partially controlled by an engine management system which may issue an engine shut down request (1) and also senses combustion quality. Upon receipt of an engine shut-down request (1), inlet passages to an intake manifold of the engine are partially closed. A predetermined time period (T EGRC, T TC ) after the partial closing thereof, inlet passages to the intake manifold are completely closed during maintained fuel-injection (4). The fuel injection amount (4) is increased in order to maintain an idle speed of the engine. In response to the engine management system sensing that the combustion quality (6) drops, the fuel-injection (4) is shut-off completely. As the number of revolutions per minute (7) drops below a predetermined threshold (T THR ), a predetermined time thereafter an inlet passage (3') to the intake manifold is opened during an intake phase.
