Rechargeable battery

A rechargeable battery includes an electrode assembly (10) having a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator located between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; a case (34) housing the electrode assembly (10), the case (34) having an opening; a cap assembly (20) including a cap plate (30) coupled to the opening of the case (34) and a vent member (39) on the cap plate (30) adapted to discharge a gas from the case (34); and a separation member (40) located between the electrode assembly (10) and the cap plate (30) to space apart the electrode assembly (10) from the cap plate (30).
