The invention concerns a method of and an apparatus for controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine, wherein the internal combustion engine has a multi-turbocharger system having at least two turbochargers. A method according to the invention has the following steps: ascertaining at least one turbocharger speed signal and switching over between a mono-turbocharger mode in which only the first turbocharger is active and a bi-turbocharger mode in which the first turbocharger and the second turbocharger are active, on the basis of the turbocharger speed signal.
