Method and apparatus for detecting failure of LEDs

The method involves comparing a state variable of LED branches (Z1, Z2) with a comparison value during switching on the LED branches. A failure detection signal (I-A) is generated depending on the comparison results. Branch current (I-Z1, I-Z2) flowing through the LED branches is detected as the state variable. The failure detection signal is generated when the branch current drops below the comparison value and flux voltage is present in a LED (D). A switch-off unit (6) connected in series to the LED branches is activated by the failure detection signal in a form of current flux. An independent claim is also included for a circuit arrangement for failure detection of LEDs of an illumination device in a vehicle.
