An automotive headlamp apparatus(200) comprises: a lamp unit(10,10a,10b,10c,10d,10e) configured to be capable of forming an additional light distribution pattern(Hi) that includes an upper area above the cut-off line of a light distribution pattern for low beam(Lo) and that is divided into a plurality of individual patterns(Hia-Hie); and a controller (228,228L,228R)configured to control formation of each of the individual patterns (Hia-Hie) in accordance with presence of a forward vehicle(400). The controller(228,228L,228R) reduces the illuminance of an individual pattern(Hie) overlapping an area where a forward vehicle (400) is present and increases the illuminance of at least one of other individual patterns(Hia-Hid).
