The internal combustion engine comprises a number of cylinders (1) each with control components (5,7,9) for a gas exchange. At least one additional control component (10) in the form of an electrically controlled valve (11) is provided in at least one of the cylinders by which a gas exchange between the cylinder and its environment can be realized. An independent claim is included for a method for the controlled shutting down of an internal combustion engine by use of an additional control component influencing a gas exchange between a cylinder and its environment.
