The method involves transmitting a heater operating data sequence from a server (24) to computer (20), based on request from the computer (20). Another heater operating data sequence which is dependant on the former heater operating data sequence is transmitted from the computer to a data memory of a motor vehicle heater. The sequences comprise information about the number of permissible starting processes of the heater.
