Motor vehicle comprising a device for determining a surface condition of a roadway

Device for determining the properties of a road surface comprises a light sensitive sensor for measuring the light reflected from the road surface and an analyzer for determining the road surface properties dependent on the power of the light signal at at least three wavelengths in the infrared range. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle that uses the light from a sensor used primarily for determining vehicle separations as a source of light to be reflected from the road surface. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (A) a transport system with two or more vehicles exchanging information about the properties of a road surface and; (B) a device for determining the properties of a road surface in which an analyser is used to determine the properties based on the ratio of reflected light power at two different wavelengths.
