A lithium secondary battery with an electrochemical cell comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte wherein said positive or negative electrode is an electrode having a thin surface film composed of active material capable of lithium storage and release on a current collector, wherein the nonaqueous electrolyte contains at least ethyl-2,2,2,-trifluoroethyl carbonate.
