The stiffening element (10) comprises a flexible plate (12) consisting of a light material, with at least one cover layer (14, 16) incorporating a plurality of stiffening elements formed by crinkling of a material layer. An independent claim is also included for an application of the proposed stiffening element as a reinforcement of panels, shaped areal objects and the like.
