The cross member for a motor vehicle has one section (1) formed from two half-shells (5,6) which are interconnected and form a box profile. An insertion piece (17) is fitted into the cross member which is rigidly connected to the half-shells. The insert piece may have flanges connected to the half-shells. The insertion piece lies against the half-shells from the outside on one side and from the inside on the other side.
