A membrane-electrode unit for direct methanol fuel cells, containing an ion-conducting membrane, anode and cathode electrode layers, anode backing(s) and cathode backing(s), in which the anode backing shows a lower water-tightness (WD-A) than the cathode backing (WD-C), measured as hydrostatic pressure according to DIN EN 20811.
