A vehicle navigation apparatus comprises an input means for inputting locations including a current position and a destination, a memory for storing map information, a route calculator for searching a route to a destination based on map information stored in the memory, a current position detector for detecting current vehicle position, and a control means for displaying on a display unit, while overlapping on map information, a route acquired as a result of the search and the detected current position. The vehicle navigation apparatus further comprises a means for determining whether or not the destination for which route search is to be performed by the route calculator is already set, a means for displaying, when it is determined that the destination is already set, map information of an area around this destination, a location designating means for designating a location around the destination from the map information of the area around the destination, and a location registering means for storing the designated location for use in setting a new destination.
