Energy absorbing steering wheel

The energy absorbing steering wheel comprises a frame (2), hub (10), spokes (4,5) and steering wheel rim (1), all with a covering (3). The covering at least in the region above the hub has at least one cavity for the supporting of the energy absorption. The cavity extends from the hub into the upper region of the covering facing the occupant of the vehicle. The covering above the cavity has a thickness which allows a deformation following an impact by the occupant but without breaking.
