The rack-and-pinion steering for a motor vehicle has a steering housing in which a rack (14) is mounted to move longitudinally, a pinion meshing with the rack, and thrust pad (13) installed on the rack side opposite an engagement side with the pinion. The thrust pad has a guide roller (15) rotatably conformable to the contour of the rack. A support pivot (16) accommodating the guide roller is mounted by its two ends in the thrust pad via a needle bush (17), the closed bottom (17.1) of which bears on the end face of the support pivot under pretensioning.
